JACK McConnell was forced to defend the controversial M74 extension during first minister's question time yesterday amid growing political anger at a possible (pounds) 1bn bill for the scheme.

Patrick Harvie, the Glasgow Green list MSP, challenged the first minister over the potential use of a public private partnership (PPP) to build the five-mile link and maintain it and other nearby roads for 30 years.
