WITH the clamour over his initial refusal to attend the D-Day anniversary fading, Jack Mc-Connell took his place among the ranks of dignitaries gathered in Normandy yesterday to pay their respects.

Pictured alongside Scottish veterans dressed in kilts and military attire, the first minister opted for a low-key formal appearance, perhaps mindful of the disdain with which his decision to don a pinstripe kilt was greeted at the Tartan Day celebrations in New York.
