JACK McConnell angered eminent legal figures yesterday by accusing anyone calling for a public inquiry into the Shirley McKie case of being politically motivated. The claim was described as "disgraceful" by a former solicitor general.

Ms McKie, a former detective, was awarded a GBP750,000 settlement after a wrongful accusation of leaving her fingerprint at a crime scene ended her career.
