If there is a phrase that might sum up the sense of irreverence and elusiveness in Paddy McCourt's play, perhaps he himself expresses it most vividly: "What would be best for me is a manager who says, 'If you come back past the halfway line, you're getting fined a week's wages.' "

He smiles, but the Northern Irishman's flair is a precious commodity, not least because it is housed in a body that has succumbed to a series of injuries since he joined Celtic two years ago. But then he has summed himself up while talking about the 4-6- 0 formation that Craig Levein employed against the Czech Republic.
