Rory McIlroy, whose world status just keeps on rising following his Ryder Cup performance, had a nice line in self-deprecation yesterday as he arrived back in St Andrews for the tournament that kickstarted his professional career three years ago, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The tournament is played over three courses - Carnoustie, Kingsbarns and the Old Course at St Andrews - and McIlroy noted that he will be at St Andrews tomorrow, when he has a ghost to lay to rest. "Last time I played it on Friday I shot 80," he said.
