It is a measure of the public interest in the topic of MPs' expenses that the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority's (Ipsa) website crashed within an hour of its launch yesterday under the weight of 80,000 hits. That situation is unlikely to recur. Once Members of Parliament are aware that their constituents will be able to trawl through their claims at the click of a mouse, the likelihood of stumbling across some egregious demand is considerably diminished.
At the Scottish Parliament, where the power of transparency was recognised from the beginning, the publication of MSPs' expenses does not often provoke controversy or opprobrium. That is as it should be.See the full content of this document
