BETH Pearson's thoughtful article (April 20) on the relative nature of different approaches to morality stimulates me to suggest an alternative approach against which moral concepts can be measured. A commonsense morality can be founded on the survival of our species, which can safely be assumed is desired by all religions, by those equally committed to the faith of atheism and even by those self-defined realists the agnostics.

The survival of the species depends upon the maintenance of a varied gene pool, benevolent co-operation between individuals, straightforward honesty and ability to restrain one's own desires when essential for the species.
