Summary
EVERYTHING is going swimmingly for Scotland on the other side of the world. This small country's medal haul at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne is already in double figures. Swimming is responsible for six of the eight golds won (the medals tally for all sports stands at present at an impressive 19). Scotland's success in the pool has taken many by surprise. That the swimmers we now know to be among the best in their sport were not household names in their own land before the games is down to the fact they do a great deal of their training abroad, in Australia. We cannot compete with Australia on the weather front, which is as conducive to swimming there as it is off-putting to the sport in this country.
If there is a lesson from Down Under that we can hope to emulate, it is in the importance of investing in facilities and coaches to bring on the best of young Scottish talent. Progress is being made. The Scottish Executive has given Scottish swimming GBP670,000 to invest in coaching, developing clubs and supporting the sport's elite athletes. But swimmers need places to practise in and where we seem to be foundering is in the provision of top-quality pools.See the full content of this document
