The after-shocks that usually follow an earthquake were more of a single tremor at the French Open yesterday, even if third seed Novak Djokovic will be feeling pretty shaky this morning having succumbed to the wiles and the wherefores of Austrian Juergen Melzer in a match that was marginally less exhausting to watch as it must have been to play.

On a day when the sun returned to Roland Garros, Rafael Nadal avoided the fate that had befallen Roger Federer the previous day, easing into the semi-finals with a tough, but nevertheless impressive 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 win over another Spaniard, Nicolas Almagro.
