Carlo Maria Giulini was a reverential servant of the great composers of classical music. Born in 1914 at Barletta in Apulia, south-eastern Italy, Giulini grew up in the Dolomites as an Italian in a Germanspeaking area and later developed an equal devotion to Italian opera and German symphonies.
