PARENTS and politicians last night criticised a council plan to merge secondary schools in a move they said would accentuate social divisions in one of Scotland's most deprived areas.

Inverclyde Council's education committee yesterday approved a scheme which will reduce the number of secondaries in the region from eight to five. Under the mergers, thousands of children will attend three different schools in as many years.
