THE chances of last year's Scottish Grand National winner, Merigo, getting into the Aintree National on Saturday look slim. Only five horses in the race proper defected at the five-day declaration and it looks likely that the Andrew Parker-trained gelding will now aim for a back-to-back success at the Ayr version.

Welsh National winners Synchronised and Notre Pere were the highest-profile withdrawals yesterday, which leaves Arbor Supreme, Our Monty and Royal Rosa fighting for the 40th and final guaranteed place in the big-race field.
