FEARS grew last night that the economic crisis gripping Greece could spread to heavily indebted Italy as German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Rome to undertake speedy budget reforms to help restore confidence in the eurozone.

Any new bailout could involve British taxpayers' money as the European Financial Stability Fund (EFSF) might run out of funds and, conequently, the International Monetary Fund, to which the UK is a contributor, might be called upon to help.
