THOUSANDS of expectant mothers are shunning midwifeled maternity services in favour of travelling further afield to units managed by consultants.

More than three-quarters of mothers-to-be in Argyll and Clyde are travelling up to 30 miles to consultants in Paisley and Glasgow after the centralisation of maternity care in the region last year, according to the BBC.
