Summary
IT did not take Alan Milburn long to demonstrate Tony Blair's maladroitness in appointing him to the position of Labour's supremo for the next general election campaign. In describing, so infelicitously, Gordon Brown's masterly speech to the Labour Party conference as "simply screaming louder and louder" about past achievements, he is revealing the unattractive, unacceptable face of Old Labour.
Milburn is a former Trotskyite. He may have rejected the Trotskyite politico-economic analysis of his youth but he still retains its mindset of factionalism and adherence to perpetual revolution.
