DAVID Miliband - the man who once saw himself as Labour's saviour, even a prime minister in waiting - resigned himself to life on the back benches as the party's new leader, his brother Ed, asserted his left-wing credentials last night by giving his strongest signal yet he would put up taxes to protect public services.
