DAVID Miliband - the man who once saw himself as Labour's saviour, even a prime minister in waiting - resigned himself to life on the back benches as the party's new leader, his brother Ed, asserted his left-wing credentials last night by giving his strongest signal yet he would put up taxes to protect public services.

In a day of high emotion, the former Foreign Secretary, left, announced that he was walking away from the Shadow Cabinet so his younger sibling could lead "with no distractions or suggestions of splits and divisions".
