HE has been branded a philistine and a cultural vandal, but Frank McAveety, the culture minister, looked at home amid the Victorian splendour of the Usher Hall in Edinburgh.

Last year, The Herald ac-companied him to shows at the Festival Fringe but 12 months on - during which he oversaw a controversial restructuring of Scottish Opera - he chose a dose of "high culture" with a classical concert by the Cleveland Orchestra.
