THE threat of direct intervention from Brussels to force the removal of barriers to competition in professional services has receded - at least for the time being.
Mario Monti, the European Union competition commissioner, concluded his year-long "stock-take" of professional regulation last week with the observation that national regulators are best-placed to eliminate anti-competitive practices such as price-fixing.
