THE number of home loans given by the major banks dropped sharply last month as court orders for house repossessions rose to their highest level for more than four years.

Loans for house purchases during September, down by almost a third from September last year, were further evidence of a slow- down in the housing market heralded last week by a drop in the overall value of mortgages approved by the banks and building societies.
