THE age of recruits to the armed forces may be raised from 16 to 18 in an effort to protect vulnerable youngsters following the mysterious deaths of four soldiers at the Deepcut barracks.

The Ministry of Defence was urged to consider raising the enlistment age in a move senior officers fear would rapidly undermine the national recruitment base and create a manpower crisis in an already overstretched Army.
