Summary

A NIGHT of frantic arithmetic last night ended with Andy Murray being counted out of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London.

The Scot, who had already beaten Juan Martin Del Potro in three sets in Group A of the competition, defeated Fernando Verdasco of Spain 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 yesterday afternoon. But Del Potro's victory over Roger Federer last night in the O2 Arena sent the Scot home by the narrowest of margins. The Argentine defeated the world No.1 6- 2, 6-7, 6-3 to give all three players in the group two victories. All three had won the same number of sets. So the group was decided on games won and lost. Federer had 44-40, Del Potro had 45-43 and Murray had 44-43. He therefore missed out on a semifinal place by just one game The world No.1 and Del Potro, the US Open champion, now progress to the last four which will be played tomorrow. Robin Soderling of Sweden has qualified from the other group. Novak Djokovic or Nikolay Dvydenko will take the fourth spot.
