THEY were expecting a busy day, but those behind the scenes at the museum were not expecting quite the spectacle unfolding outside.

In the first hour after the newly refurbished National Museum of Scotland's 10am grand opening yesterday, 5905 excited visitors had entered, rising to 10,000 by midday - the expected total for the whole day.
