Summary
The author of Fight Club, Lullaby and Diary likes to scare himself to death in the name of escapism. He tells us why he's so fond of an eerie old museum in a remote corner of Washington State. Haunted, by Chuck Palahniuk, is published by Vintage on Thursday, priced GBP7.99.
There's a creepy museum in the desert of eastern Washington State that I have loved since I was a child. It was built as an enormous Italian-style villa by a railroad magnate called Samuel Hill at the turn of the 20th century. He had an idea to found a utopian community and imported lots of Quaker farmers from elsewhere in America. The people arrived, however, to find a barren area with nothing but sage bushes, so within a year they all abandoned the project.See the full content of this document
