RE the image of Germany peddled by not just the educational establishment but by many people of influence in Great Britain these days. As someone who has spent her life teaching German at all levels and now trying to 'get them young' by teaching German in the primary schools, I have found it infuriating and depressing that any good work in changing attitudes towards Germany and the Germans is counteracted by the fact that World War Two is a topic for children in Primary 7.

World War Two is an immensely complicated issue. I would argue that it is too complicated an issue to be taught in primary schools. The children just cannot understand what was going on. What many of them take away from this course are banal images and ideas that shape their attitudes and the attitudes of society in general for the rest of their lives.
