IT HAS leaked out that not only did Prime Minister Blair cherry- pick his way through the meagre and wizened crop of intelligence on Iraq, but drastically pruned out the caveats from the attorney- general's advice on the legality of war. We were duped on all fronts by Blair. What he has betrayed, above all, is a long-established faith in the integrity and independence of the intelligence services.

As someone brought up during the Second World War, and familiar with the stunning wealth of intelligence fed to Winston Churchill by the codebreakers of Bletchley Park, I, like many others, was over- ready to assume that the most sensitive and damning data on Iraq might have to be withheld from the public. During the Second World War, the government knew about concentration camps and other matters which had to be kept under wraps for fear that their disclosure would reveal which German codes could be cracked. There was no comparable justification for secrecy this time round.
