IT seems that the gods of football may listen to Martin O'Neill's prayers after all. This Champions League campaign had provided only wretched disappointment for Celtic before last night's bizarre events at Parkhead and hopes of a reprieve had been dampened by both the injury problems affecting the club and the increasing lapses in concentration of those able to take the field.

Enter Eric Poulat. The French referee's name is unlikely to be forgotten by O'Neill, but it is guaranteed to remain imprinted on Shakhtar Donetsk.
