LET'S see if we can get this right. Nuclear weapons are dangerous and a potent threat to world peace. Developing nuclear technology for military use is a clear breach of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. Expanding nuclear technology or diversifying from a civil programme, ditto.

The possibility of their use in the Middle East would further destabilise an already chaotic region. Most particularly, they should not fall into the hands of an intransigent president in thrall to religious fundamentalists. All good sound reasons why George Bush should be leaned on by the international community to scale down his nuclear arsenal rather than throwing billions of dollars at new generations of weaponry designed to be deployed from outer space, as a new tactical battlefield strike force, or airborne "bunkerbusters".
