New York have made themselves an international laughing stock by declining to build the pounds-1000m stadium in Manhattan which was to be the centerpiece of their bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games, writes Doug Gillon.

The city's mayor, Michael Bloomberg, said: "We have let America down." He is now discussing the possibility of withdrawing New York from the International Olympic Committee vote due to take place in Singapore on July 6.
