For a Scottish newspaper column, ostensibly about chess, it may seem odd that I rarely write about chess in Scotland, but I believe the chess world's main challenge is to be less parochial. Our game has enormous social value and cultural resonance, but we cannot make this contribution if we waste whatever media oxygen we have by talking to ourselves. It always seemed clear to me that my target audience is the readers of The Herald who have curiosity and appreciation for the game, even if they rarely play.

Although I owe this platform to my formative experiences in Scottish chess, my desire to link chess to real-life issues is no great loss to the base. Chessscotland.com provides thorough news coverage and a noticeboard providing "a place for chess nuts to boast over an open forum". The Chessscotland site is the envy of several other national federations, and was the place I learned of a truly newsworthy event.
