THE problems facing NHS 24 have nothing to do with extra work caused by GPs opting out of out-of-hours work. There are still plenty of GPs working in out-of-hours centres throughout the country. Neither is the problem of Andy Kerr's making.

The problem was caused by the unlamented Susan Deacon ignoring the profession's advice that it would be folly to squeeze all of the previously efficient, well-trialled and wellaccepted GP co- operative triage services into three national call centres.
