FERTILISER prices are now running at around 30-per cent higher than 12 months ago, while the number of restrictions on how much farmers can use has also increased.

It would appear that farmers are reducing applications, particularly on grassland, according to the latest British Survey of Fertiliser Practice. The figures relate to 2004, but they show that the average rate of nitrogen applications on grassland at 77 kilos per hectare is the lowest recorded since the early 1970s.
