Summary
BRIAN Boyd's interesting input towards the streaming-in- education debate was rather undermined by his assertion that a 21st- century education system "seeks to produce successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors" (Letters, August 20) .
That emphasis will come as something of a surprise to the thousands of subject principals returning to school to face, in the first meeting of the first day, a scroll of statistics showing them and their departments in varying shades of comparative success and failure.
