BRIAN Boyd's interesting input towards the streaming-in- education debate was rather undermined by his assertion that a 21st- century education system "seeks to produce successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors" (Letters, August 20) .

That emphasis will come as something of a surprise to the thousands of subject principals returning to school to face, in the first meeting of the first day, a scroll of statistics showing them and their departments in varying shades of comparative success and failure. Tables of exam results, yes, but no tables of successful learners, etc, to extol, examine and contrast. Next steps?
