NORTH Koreans wept after the death of their "Dear Leader" Kim Jong Il as governments around the world monitored developments in the nuclear-armed reclusive state.

The 69-year-old dictator, who has run the country since 1994, suffered a heart attack during a morning train ride. His death was announced on state television by a tearful news anchorwoman dressed in black, who said "great mental and physical strain" had led to his death while on his way to offer field guidance to workers on Saturday.
