GIVEN the discussion on reform of the tax system, how is this for a novel idea? Why don't we tax the rich?
Despite their protestations to the contrary, the rich, in real terms, pay very little in tax; the tax burden falls overwhelmingly on working-class people through PAYE and VAT. What's more, there exists in Britain an entire industry whose one purpose is to assist the rich in tax avoidance. That job is made easy by a tax regime specifically designed to protect the interests of the wealthiest in society.
