IT IS possible to agree strongly with your editorial (November 5) and Professor Farrell's letter (November 7) and yet feel as far away as ever from a constructive solution to Scotland's monolingual culture. One may pour scorn on the attempt to mask a change of policy by semantic sleight of hand - "requirement" becomes "entitlement" - yet it is almost axiomatic that a compulsory subject reclassified as optional will show a drop in numbers.
But linguists are not accountants. A drop in Standard Grade students would matter less if linguistic achievement at the higher level were thriving.See the full content of this document
