Summary
SO we are now going to have a second-rate opera company to accompany our second-rate football team. Only a second-rate bunch of politicians can produce a solution which results in 88 talented people losing their jobs, no new productions and less opera. Scottish Opera may have had some problems in its financial management but they were mainly caused by consistent underfunding, as Peter Jonas made clear.
When I attended the last performance of Scottish Opera's world- class production of Wagner's Ring I feared then that this was Scottish Opera's Gotterdammerung as well as Wagner's. It appears to have come true. No doubt the philistines of New Labour will claim they have imposed financial disclipine on a spendthrift company; for those who know the arts, they have left nothing but a smoking ruin.See the full content of this document
