NETWORK Rail has defied pressure from politicians, unions and its own regulator to curb executive pay by agreeing bonuses worth more than GBP1.2m for its executive board.

In a bullish assessment of performance, Iain Coucher, chief executive of the not-for-profit company that owns and operates Britain's railway infrastructure, claimed yesterday it had had a "successful" year which was reflected in the bonus payouts.
