During the lengthy dispute by nursery nurses and their local authority employers, I have not read one word about the appalling conditions in which many nursery nurses are employed in the private sector.
Until two years ago my wife, a qualified nurse with a career spanning 30 years and a degree-level qualification in child care and education, worked in a well-known nursery in the Royal Mile, Edinburgh. Her pay, at (pounds) 4.60 per hour, was only a few pence above the then national minimum, and above that of some of her colleagues.
