Ruth Wishart questioned whether the chief executive of the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) should be paid more than the man running the National Health Service and substantially more than the Prime Minister, who, after all, is only running the country ("Is PM worth less than his civil servants?", The Herald, June 2).

There are other facts to raise eyebrows. The OFT's website contains its annual accounts for 2002 to 2009. These reveal that during this period the OFT's staff increased by 40% from 498 to 697 with the average cost per employee rising from around pound(s)35,000 to over pound(s)52,000, or 50%. Total staff costs more than doubled from pound(s)17.4m to pound(s)36.5m indicating the main growth was in the ranks of the high earners.
