SAYING SORRY: As the rest of the world celebrated the 60th anniversary of VJ Day, it was a day for mourning and atonement in Japan. Bereaved family members received chrysanthemums from white- gloved officials to lay before an altar at a memorial service for the country's 2.5 million war dead at Budokan Hall in Tokyo.

Junichiro Koizumi, the Japanese prime minister, marked the anniversary of his country's second world war defeat with an apology for suffering caused in Asia by Japanese military aggression. He promised Tokyo would never again take part in war.
