ITIS sad to read of the loneliness of pensioners (April 1). This, unfortunately, is anything but new. It was a problem we came across in the Govan area of Glasgow when I was a public health medical officer there in the 1950s.

We tried to tackle it by modifying the duties of the health visitors (the "green ladies") so that they could make weekly visits to the most vulnerable old people: mainly those who lived alone.
