I don't always agree with Ian Bell, but his acerbic comments on Tuesday's ceremonial opening of parliament were spot on ("Like the Queen, I'm wearied of the coalition's deal-making", The Herald, May 26). Surely a 21st-century democracy can devise a more appropriate way to mark the routine opening of a new parliamentary session than all the ridiculous 19th-century pomp and pageantry.

Is it necessary for the Queen to travel in a gilded gold coach with uniformed flunkies, and most of the British Army, apart from those soldiering in Afghanistan, lining the streets or riding on horseback? Is it necessary for her to wear a flowing evening gown in the morning, with a glittering tiara and diamonds and pearls, accompanied by her consort in military dress bedecked with multiple sashes and rows of medals?
