POLITICIANS and children's charities have strongly criticised any move towards dismantling the world-renowned children's hearings system in Scotland.

The Herald revealed yesterday that key Scottish Executive advisers want the welfare-based system split in two, although they had made it clear that no decision had yet been made. If acted on, it would result in a more punitive juvenile courts system, separate from children's panels, which would continue to safeguard young victims.
