EIGHT primary schools in East Dunbartonshire have been saved from the axe after councillors threw out controversial closure plans.

A review of East Dunbartonshire Council's primary school estate included plans to merge seven schools with others across the county and to close one completely. However, at a council meeting on Thursday night, councillors voted unanimously not to go ahead with consultations over the plans, which would have saved the Labour and Conservative coalition-led council about pound(s)1.5 million.
