Summary
I would suggest that if Prince William is made a duke ("Kate set for low-key celebrations on last birthday before wedding", January 7) there are rather more, otherwise extinct UK Royal Dukedoms (post- 1801) available than Sussex (extinct since 1843), Clarence (extinct since 1892) and Cambridge (extinct since 1904), with the Dukedom of Connaught (extinct since 1943) being an unlikely candidate for revival as Connaught is in the Republic of Ireland.
The UK Royal Dukedoms of Avondale (extinct since 1892) and Strathearn (extinct since 1943) are also available for revival. One assumes that the Dukedom of Windsor (1937-1972) was a one-off creation and that the Dukedoms of Albany, Cumberland and Teviotdale, as suspended in 1917 and forfeited by German princes in 1919, are not available for recycling as, in terms of the Titles Deprivation Act 1917, their heirs retain the right to petition the Crown for the restoration of such peerages.See the full content of this document
