ONE thousand orthopaedic patients are to have theirNHS assessment and treatment done in private hospitals, under a deal approved yesterday by Greater Glasgow Health Board.

The executive has been pushing for more engagement with the private healthcare sector in a bid to tackle stubbornly high waiting times and lists, and the first contract of its kind will see assessment, diagnosis and treatment all carried out by the Ross Hall and Nuffield hospitals in the city. The Pounds2m contract is in addition to Pounds15m a year for the next three years allocated to private sector contracts in an announcement last week by Andy Kerr, the health minister.
