MOST religions agree that killing is wrong. To randomly kill members of a population to achieve ideological change is evil. Whether death is delivered by missiles on the direction of an elected leader of a "democracy" or by bombs from a suicide murderer following a self-appointed demagogue is irrelevant. The actions of the one do not justify the in-kind retaliation of the other. That said, the purpose of terrorists is to cause change by spreading "shock and awe" among the population and an intelligent society should consider how it responds proportionately to such attacks.

It appears that we have changed our process of law, a policeman acting on suspicion can now be prosecution, jury, judge and executioner, and the death sentence has been reintroduced.

Process of Law Changed Without Asking Parliament

All this without reference to what is supposed to be our democratic body - parliament. The person who took this decision, be it the home secretary or the commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, should now be tried for manslaughter. If not then the terrorists have won. The people of London may not have panicked but clearly our "establishment" has. Unless the individuals in the establishment are called to be responsible for their decisions then it is difficult to see what democratic rights and freedoms we are protecting.
