Summary

GOOD to see Ian Bell (June 6) is a sceptic where prohibition is concerned, but a pity he makes an exception of smoking, having, it would appear, bought the Great Passive Smoking Myth. He may feel that the decline in smoking thanks to a fourdecades-long public- health campaign has been too slow, but it has been a remarkable success compared with the three decades of scaremongering and criminalisation over drugs such as heroin and cocaine.

He might also ref lect that, as a result of the anti-smoking health campaign being all but drowned out by the shrill propaganda and now use of the criminal law by the anti-smoker lobby, the trend among young people has been reversed and more and more are taking up the habit. Prohibition always has a deleterious effect upon society, and prohibitionists, like all fanatics, are not to be trusted.
