Summary
The proposed Legal Services (Scotland) Bill 2010, presently before the Scottish Parliament, undermines one of the fundamental, internationally-recognised, principles of the rule of law: the independence of the legal profession. The Bill will allow non- lawyers to own "legal services providers".
No single word better describes what it means to be a lawyer than "independent". There is no half-way house. But instead of being independent (as a conventional law firm must be), the Bill says that "providers" need only act independently.See the full content of this document
