SCOTTISH Government ministers are being urged by Highland Council to take the former Nigg fabrication yard in Easter Ross into public ownership despite a private company seeking to buy it with claims it can create up to 1,000 jobs.

In a letter to Finance Secretary John Swinney, the council will argue that the Scottish Government or Highlands and Islands Enterprise buying the yard would be the quickest way to break the five year deadlock at Nigg and allow the yard to play a key role in the anticipated bonanza in offshore wind, wave and tidal power. It will also point to the fact that both the fabrication yards at Methil in Fife and Arnish on Lewis are already in public ownership.
